A YOUNG Whitchurch golfer has had success after winning a trophy at a prestigious tournament.

Lauren Crump, 13, is a member of Hill Valley Golf Club and she won the Liz Pook Trophy, as the leading 14 years and younger player after competing in the R&A Girls' Championships in Enville Golf Club in Stourbridge recently.

Lauren won the trophy by four shots over fellow English player, Eleanor Lichtenhein and she went on to play in the penultimate group in the final round and came fourth overall.

Lauren was pleased with how it went and hopes to do even better next year.

She said: "This will definitely boost my confidence. To play in like this in a championship is amazing.

"I've played in the last group in other tournaments, but never in something as big as this against older players.

"I think next year I can do even better."

A spokesperson for Hill Valley Golf Club congratulated Lauren for her success.

They said: "Lauren thoroughly deserves her success, she has worked tirelessly over the winter playing and practicing in all weathers.

"Practice facilities are not always ideal at Hill Valley during the winter months, so her parents have had to drive her 30 minutes to the nearest driving range every evening.

"The result in one of the most prestigious events in the golfing calendar that attracts golfers from all over the world is a testament to the work that she has put in.

"We’re all hoping for more in the coming season."
