A GROUP wanting to ‘build on the work’ already carried out to stop Shropshire Council from putting housing into a new Whitchurch Civic Centre is holding a new protest on Saturday.

The #SAVEOURCIVIC campaign, which was created in the aftermath of a public meeting to put forward residents’ views over the future of the building, is holding the ‘positive protest’ between 10.30am and 1.30pm on Saturday.

Guy Hepworth, from the campaign, says the protest outside the Civic Centre is to continue to show that it has to play a part in the town’s High Street and calendar.

OTHER NEWS:

He said: “The #SAVEOURCIVIC Campaign has been established by local residents to continue building on the positive passion and support expressed by so many townsfolk at the recent public meeting held in January.

“We believe the Civic Centre is an integral part of the High Street’s culture and Whitchurch's identity historically and going forward.

“This coming Saturday, February 24th, from 10am until 1.30pm we will be staging a positive protest outside the Civic Centre.

“People will be invited to continue signing the petition, show support, share memories of the venue and engage with why the Civic Centre should be saved for the town.

“We invite members of Shropshire Council and the Whitchurch Town Council, if available, to be present to deliver any updates or progress reports on this matter to the people of Whitchurch.”

Both Shropshire Council and Whitchurch Council are working together to come up with a new plan for the Civic Centre following the RAAC crisis.

Cabinet had been expected to rubber stamp a plan recommended by officers to them to knock down the building and replace it with a mixture of housing and facilities for public use.
