THE mother of an Ellesmere schoolgirl who died unexpectedly from a brain tumour has spoken of her pride at a road being named in her honour.

Ella McCreadie died in her sleep, aged 13, from the tumour having not shown any symptoms having attended Lakelands school the day before.

Sophie Penrose, Ella’s mum, submitted an application last year to have a road named after her daughter on the Shropshire Homes Legacy Collection in the town.

And she added that the site where McCreadie Drive will stand used to be a popular play area for the family.

“It’s really touching – we’re so proud of it,” she said.

“It came about because my friend contacted me after she had seen an article of social media where somebody said that an application could be submitted to Shropshire Council.

“I think we submitted it last January and wondered how amazing it would be if we could get one of these streets named after Ella.

“That’s how it came about, from my friend Michelle.

We actually live on the other side of the plots and I used to often walk with my three children – Ella included – with the dogs and I’ve got lots of pictures of her with them and having lots of fun.

“It really does mean such a lot to me.

“It’s a lasting memory for us and for everyone who knew her.”

Sophie added that part of the reasons why the application was made was to keep Ella’s memory shining on in the town, with more events planned.

She said: “One of the things that we put in the submission is the hope that everyone who lives there will know how special she was.

“We hope that people want to know where the name has come from and that gives us a boost to Ella’s Army and the fundraising.

“I already know someone who says that they have reserved one there in the road because of the name.

“Ella’ favourite colour was pink and a lot of people will be ‘going pink’ in March as it’s Brain Tumour Awareness Month – we’re even lighting up St Mary’s Church for it.

“This lady says she’s going to have a pink wreath on her door in McCreadie Drive which is just so lovely.”
