A MULTI million-pound project to refurbish miles of overhead electricity lines across Whitchurch is up and running as part of clean energy investment.

The £5.5 million project, which covers a distance equivalent to the length of a marathon, will modernise the network circuit between Wrexham and Marchwiel and through to Whitchurch and Crewe.

The project is being run by SP Energy Networks and it will enhance the resilience and capability of the network in the region, ensuring it’s ready for the continued uptake of green energy solutions like electric vehicles and heat pumps.

132kV general manager at SP Energy Networks, Mark Sobczak said: "It’s great to be out of the starting blocks and getting to work on this exciting project, which will not only increase the resilience of the local electricity network, but will play a key role in supporting local communities to make the transition to a cleaner and greener future.

"It’s a fantastic example of how we’re going further and faster than ever before to support the transition to a net zero future and making sure that the network is ready for the huge amounts of green electricity our customers will need as they leave gas heating and petrol cars behind.

"As always, we’re doing everything we can to minimise any disruption while the works are underway.

"We’ll continue to keep local people and businesses informed about what’s happening and when as the program progresses towards completion in October."
