A WHITCHURCH music artist has announced she will be returning to the town next month to perform live.

Sarah Paul (nee Birch) - better known as Madam Misfit - will be performing in Percy's Cafe Bar in Watergate on Friday, April 14.

Sarah performs chaphop, a genre which combines hiphop with steampunk subculture and sterotypical English obsessions like tea and cricket.

She lives in Lincolnshire, having been based there while serving in the RAF, but she is looking forward to performing back in her home town.

Sarah added: "To be coming back is lovely. But it is also coming to perform in front of my home crowd and friends who I used to go to school with.

"It is great that Whitchurch has got such an amazing live music venue. So many big acts want to play in Percy's."

Whitchurch Herald:

Sarah was a clarinettist in the RAF and performed at the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace and the Edinburgh Military Tattoo.

Sarah spoke about her experiences and challenges going into civilian life.

She said: "With the military, I was taught what to do and when to do it. I learnt a lot from it.

"I joined when I was 18 and I left in my early 30s with a family.

"I performed in front of massive crowds. It is nice to combine the skills I learnt in the military with some of my own passions.

"I have a passion for travelling and a passion to entertain through song."

Whitchurch Herald:

Sarah based her 'Madam Misfit' character on her experiences in school.

She explained: "I was bullied quite heavily in my early days at school, hence the misfit.

"As I got older I got into steampunk fashion, a combination of the Victorian era and the future.

"It brings together many people who are feeling quite lost.

Whitchurch Herald:

"A lot my music reaches out to 'misfits' and people who do not have anywhere to belong.

"I get a lot of messages of support and positivity about I have helped others."
