THE early stages of Ellesmere's pans to help celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee are underway after a tree planting ceremony in the town on Sunday.

The mayor of Ellesmere, Councillor Paul Goulbourne, was joined by his deputy, Cllr Anne Wignall, and fellow town councillors for the planting of a tree as part of the Green Canopy plans.

A town council spokesman said the tree planting is ahead of further plans in the summer.

They said: "What a beautiful day to plant a tree for the Queen's Green Canopy initiative.

"The mayor Councillor Paul Goulbourne and deputy mayor Councillor Anne Wignall were joined by Cllrs Geoff Elner, Graham Hutchinson and Joan Mowl for the tree planting at the Birch Road recreation ground on Sunday morning.

"We will be having a plaque made in Her Majesty's honour which will be unveiled on Friday, June 3 at the official opening of Birch Road Nature Reserve at 1pm – please come along and join us."
