THE newly-formed Whitchurch 1946 will be managed by Matt Owen next season.

The former Newtown midfielder takes the helm after local rivals Prees United disbanded at the end of last season with Owen now throwing in his lot with Whitchurch Alport’s new affiliate team.

The 28 year old enjoyed spells at Wrexham, Newtown, Connahs Quay and Cefn Druids before taking over at Prees where he was manager for the last two seasons in the Salop Leisure Shropshire Premier League.

Meanwhile Alport have welcomed the arrival of Jayson Starkey as new head of coaching.

The UEFA A licensed coach joins Midlands Premier League club from JD Cymru North side Cefn Druids where he enjoyed a seven year spell as assistant manager.

Alport manager Luke Goddard said: “I’ve known of Jayson for a few years and given where we’re at, also the opportunity we had to bring in someone of Jayson’s calibre given his re-location to Whitchurch it had to happen.

“So after talks I’m delighted he will join our first team to help lead our plans for 2023/24 and beyond.

“Structure has always been key for me and for us to make this a success we needed a top quality coach to come in and also from the club’s view we will also benefit massively passing the knowledge through the system to help support all our coaches from under 8s all the way through.

“Jayson’s experience nails all this and even in my short time with him he already replicates my work ethic and knows exactly the position I am in here.

“If we can replicate the success him and Huw built at Druids then we will be in for a very good season”

On the pitch the Reds have secured the future of forward Alex Hughes and defender Aaron Simms while brothers Jordan and Kieran Evans have departed to join JD Cymru North side Airbus UK Broughton following their relegation from the JD Cymru Premier.
