A PRIMARY school near Whitchurch will be hosting an athletics competition for the first time in 94 years.

Lower Heath CE Primary School in Prees will host the Lower Heath Villages Athletics Competition, which was previously known as the Prees Village Schools' Athletics on Friday, June 23.

The last competition was held in 1929 with Lower Heath beating Prees CofE Primary School.

The 2023 competition will see five local schools, Lower Heath, Tilstock, Prees, Adderley and Longlands compete against each other.

OTHER NEWS:

The event was the idea of Marches Academy Trust director of sport, health and community, George Hounsell.

He said: "I visited Lower Heath recently and noticed the photograph (pictured) and a shield on the wall.

"I went away and did some research and found out about the Prees Village Schools’ Athletics competition.

"The local area is steeped in history so I thought it would be a fantastic opportunity to bring the event to life again."

The school wants to find local residents who remember the competition and invite them down for the day and people have been invited to contact the school office if they would like to attend.

History and sport are important in Lower Heath CE Primary School and they said they are proud to be relaunching the event.

Headteacher Helen Reynolds said: "This is a wonderful opportunity for our local community to come together. It supports our family-friendly ethos perfectly.

"We have families at Lower Heath who have attended our school for five generations.  And part of our school building dates back to the 18th century, so history is embedded within our school.

"We also have some talented sports achievers with county-level tennis players and athletes, and even a black belt at tae kwon do."
