A strong batting performance saw Wellington claim the Cricket Shropshire Under-11 Club Final when they travelled to Whitchurch.

In front of a large and enthusiastic crowd at Heath Road, Wellington won the toss and decided to bat first in the final of the competition.

Three batsmen, Oliver Parton (28), Ben Thompson (25) and Jovan Uppal (26) all retired after reaching 25 as the Orleton Park side made 113-2 from their 20 overs.

Will Lewis and Ed Bell took the two wickets to fall for Whitchurch, both caught by Freddie Timmis.

In reply, Whitchurch lost wickets at regular intervals with only Timmis (retired on 25) managing to make double figures as the hosts finished on 72-8.

Wellington were well led by skipper Josh McDonald who took 3-5 and also claimed three catches, while Ben Thompson also bowled well taking 2-8 in the 41-run victory.

England Women’s Academy star, Evelyn Jones, who is about to play for Lancashire Thunder in the Kia Women’s Super League, presented the medals to both teams and the winner’s shield to Wellington skipper McDonald.
