Young players coming through the ranks are impressing at senior level.

Shropshire have named a 12-man squad for their latest National Counties Twenty20 double-header against Cumbria at Cockermouth Cricket Club on Sunday, including George McCormick and Ben Roberts.

George McCormick, who plays his club cricket for Bowdon, and Ben Roberts, currently at Shifnal, are both included in the travelling party as Shropshire look to build on eight-wicket victories over Cheshire and Staffordshire.

Dave Cartledge, Shropshire's team manager, said: "I would like to win the first game on Sunday as we've lost the first games against Cheshire and Staffordshire before then winning the second game against both.

"If we win the first game then you stand a chance of winning the double-header, and at this point in the group having two wins would probably more or less put you through.

"It would be terrific if we could achieve a double-header."

Shropshire are third in Group One with two wins and two defeats from their first four matches, still in the running for a place in the Super 12s stage.

Their only two match days so far have followed the same pattern: a defeat in the first game, followed by an eight-wicket win in the second, both against Cheshire and more recently Staffordshire at Wem.

Three changes have been made from the squad that faced Staffordshire last time out.

Returning to the side are Warwickshire’s England under-19 all-rounder Theo Wylie, Shrewsbury batter Seb Scott, and former Yorkshire left-arm wrist spinner Sam Wisniewski, set to make his first Shropshire appearance this season.

They replace the unavailable Matt Simmonds, Connor Marshall, and Anis Raza.

Cartledge spoke highly of the younger players in the squad.

He said: "The highest praise I can give them is that they look as though they should be there."

Teenagers Finn Jones, Ollie Smith, and Morgan Ward, all products of Shropshire’s own pathway system, keep their places in the squad after impressing in the competition.

Shropshire will finish their group fixtures with two T20 games against Northumberland at Wellington on June 21.

Reflecting on the season so far, Mr Cartledge said: "The two sides we've played in Cheshire and Staffordshire are very good sides.

"We beat Cheshire comfortably in the second game and then beat Staffordshire really comfortably in the second game at Wem.

"We probably got the better of both sides on the day we played them without winning both matches, so we've done really well.

"There was a good crowd at Wem and I think they enjoyed it.

"It was good cricket all round."

Shropshire’s squad: Joe Johnson, Sahal Malvernkar, Tom Fell (captain), Theo Wylie, Seb Scott, Finn Jones, Morgan Ward, Joe Stanley, Ben Roberts, Sam Wisniewski, Ollie Smith, George McCormick.
