MATTY JAMES went into the current Championship campaign with the aim of earning a new deal and the midfielder is "absolutely buzzing" he's been able to extend his stay at The Racecourse.

The 34-year-old was under contract until the end of the 2025-26 season but has penned a new deal keeping him with Wrexham until the summer of 2027.

A free agent after being released by Bristol City when he joined on a short-term contract in October 2024 before signing an extension, James played a key role as the Reds finished runners-up in League One last term to secure a record-breaking third successive promotion.

With Wrexham back in the second tier for the first time in 43 years, James has featured in every league game and played his part in putting Phil Parkinson's side within touching distance of the play-offs.

"Great news, I'm absolutely buzzing," he said.

"It's something that I set out at the start of the season to be able to do, to try and prove my worth and basically go out there and perform in as many games as I possibly can to try and earn a new contract and I've done that so I'm delighted.

"It gets a little bit harder as you get a little bit older to be able to earn contracts but I feel like I've earned it and the club have been fantastic.

"I'm very thankful to the football club, to everybody that's associated (with it), owners, fans, players, staff, everybody, so I'm really happy."

James enjoyed a long spell with Leicester, where he was a promotion winner and was with the Foxes when they won the Premier League in 2016, before spending three seasons in the Championship with Bristol City.

Following his release by City where he was a regular, James was without a club for a few months until Parkinson came calling and he's delighted with how things have turned out since making the switch to north Wales, but he's far from finished.

"I've said it numerous times, it was a strange period in my career that I didn't really understand what exactly was going on and why," said James, who has often donned the captain's armband for the Reds.

"This opportunity came and I've not looked back since. It's been an amazing chapter in my career so far but it's not finished.

"I want to try and keep going and play as many games as I possibly can for this football club and keep putting the performances in."
