KEVIN WILKIN believes the exciting takeover of Wrexham by two Hollywood stars is a reward for supporters who helped save the club from going out of business.

Actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney are close to becoming new owners at The Racecourse with the duo set to immediately invest £2million when they take control.

The takeover has thrust Wrexham, currently spending a 13th season in non-league, into the spotlight with the club gaining global exposure.

The Reds faced an uncertain future when Geoff Moss and Ian Roberts announced they were pulling out but the club was rescued by the Wrexham Supporters Trust who became owners in December 2011.

Fans had already raised more than £100,000 in just seven hours to ensure Wrexham could start the 2011-12 Conference season.

Former Wrexham boss Wilkin applauded the work of the Trust to stabilise the club but he believes the takeover can help the club finally clinch promotion back to the Football League.

"A lot of people might question how much further that format can take the club," said Wilkin.

"Will the club lose anything by trying to go down this route? Hopefully not and it is for everything to gain and not a lot to lose.

"Certainly the Trust does a fantastic job for the club and everybody should be mightily proud of themselves because from my time there, I remember listening to the stories where people donated money that they probably couldn't afford at the time to save the club.

"It is for them sort of people that you want to see it move forward.

"We are all aware of what the club means to everybody in the community and wider than that as well because the support stretches far and wide.

"If this is the next step and it gets the club into more of a level that it should be playing at then it can only be a positive thing."

Wilkin took over as manager in March 2014 and guided Wrexham to the third round of the FA Cup but was sacked 24 hours after losing the FA Trophy final to North Ferriby United at Wembley on March 30, 2015.

The 53-year-old, now in charge of National League North outfit Brackley Town, believes the club faces a bright future under Reynolds and McElhenney.

"It is really positive news," said Wilkin.

"It is exciting that people as high profile as that are keen to get involved with the club.

"Hopefully it is the best thing for everybody and it is the catalyst to get Wrexham back where they really belong.

"It is a massive club and it needs to be playing on a bigger stage.

"If these people are able to give it that little bit of a boost that it needs then exciting times.

"It is probably what the club needs right now."
