Whitchurch Alport have advanced to the next stage of the FA Cup.

The Shropshire side secured their place in the preliminary round with a 2-1 comeback victory away at Hinckley AFC on Saturday.

Goals from Ollie Holden and a late header from Tom Allen sealed the win, marking their ninth consecutive season reaching this stage of the competition.

Hinckley took the lead midway through the first half when Andrew Woolridge fired past Tyler French, but missed a golden opportunity to double their advantage shortly after.

Chandler Pegg was unable to convert from close range, leaving the door open for a Whitchurch response.

Alfie Gregory forced Hinckley goalkeeper Matt Bosworth into his first real save of the match.

Whitchurch found their equaliser against the run of play just five minutes before half-time, when Holden turned and fired a low shot beyond Bosworth.

Manager Jayson Starkley's half-time team talk seemed to have the desired effect, as Whitchurch started the second half with renewed energy.

Hinckley created early chances after the restart, including a fine save from French and a crucial last-ditch block by defender Bish.

Tommy McNally, who joined Whitchurch permanently this summer, made an impact off the bench and forced two quick saves from Bosworth.

The winner arrived five minutes from time when Allen powered a header past Bosworth from a corner.

Starkey said: "I'll be honest, I think that I've got it slightly wrong to start with. We maybe give them a little bit too much respect to start with and we sat off maybe a little bit too deep.

"When we did get the turnover of the ball, our quality wasn't where it needed to be. But full credit has to go to the players. And as I said, it's 11 v 11. So shape and tactics sometimes go out the window when you don't do those ABCs right.

"We know this is going to be a sort of a long season as we want to go far in all the competitions this year as well. So hopefully we'll be closing up to sort of 50 games by the end of the season."

Whitchurch will now host Coventry United in the FA Cup Preliminary Round on Saturday, August 22.

Before that, they face two home fixtures in quick succession.

Brocton visit the Dourish & Day this Saturday, followed by a match against early Midland League pace-setters Runcorn Town just 48 hours later.
