A Shropshire Academy cricket fixture will showcase emerging talent in a 50-over contest on home soil this weekend.

The Academy will take on a Shropshire County Cricket League representative side at Whitchurch's Heath Road ground on Sunday, with play starting at 11am.

Luke Thornton of Allscott Heath will captain the academy side, which also features Whitchurch cricketer Alex Heath and Bowdon’s George McCormick who hails from Whitchurch.

The squad includes five players with senior National Counties experience this season in Wem’s Harry Chandler, Chad Brandrick, Morgan Ward, ex-Oswestry player Ben Roberts, and McCormick.

Michael Robinson, captain of the County Cricket League team, plays for Whitchurch, with team-mate Iftikhar Khan and Wem’s Sam Peate also included.

Dan Walker from Shelton will keep wicket, while Alex Ollerenshaw and Ralph Davies from Wem are also selected.

Allscott Heath’s Jason Summers, Ludlow’s Nathan Engelbrecht, and Alex Johnson from Sentinel are also part of the squad.

The County League team is completed by Hugh Morris (Wellington), Ali Mustafa (St Georges), and captain Michael Robinson.

Admission is free for spectators.

The match is the Academy’s second of the season following a win over Wales National County (North), in which off-spinner Gursimrat Singh took seven wickets.

The Academy will play Worcester University’s first XI at Ombersley next Wednesday.
