Wem Tennis Club's Mark Wilson has reached the final of an international tennis tournament.

The chairman of Tennis Shropshire reached the men’s over-60s doubles final at the ITF World Tennis Masters Tour MT200 Wirral, teaming up with Shrewsbury’s Calum Kennedy.

The pair, who also reached the final last year, enjoyed two strong wins to reach the last round but were ultimately beaten 6-3, 6-1 by Andrew Hibell and Neil McPherson.

Wilson said: "We were finalists last year as well, so hopefully third time lucky next year."

The tournament, held at Bidston Sports and Activity Centre on the Wirral, is part of the ITF World Tennis Masters Tour, a global circuit for players aged 30 and over.

Wilson was one of five Shropshire players who competed in the event.

Wilson said: "It was a very good week. We had a number of players from the county taking part which was good to see.

"It’s one of our local events and we had some good results.

"It’s always an enjoyable atmosphere, very friendly, whilst being extremely competitive, so it was a pleasure to take part."
