A series of deliberate fires near Wem are being investigated by police.

Firefighters from the town were called out twice over the weekend after blazes broke out in Grinshill.

A spokesperson for Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that following these and incidents the previous weekend, West Mercia Police have now been informed.

They said: "Unfortunately, due to the incidents attached last Saturday and both incidents we attended this evening in Grinshill, it is believed they have been started deliberately.

"West Mercia Police have been informed. If you have any information please contact the police or our fire control."

On Friday evening, firefighters from Wem were called the The Hill at Grinshill shortly before 7pm, to an incident involving hedgerows and undergrowth that had "multiple seats of fire", and half an hour later there were called to the same site to a bonfire which was "well alight". A hose reel jet was used to extinguish the blaze.
