Frustrations abound after two Whitchurch women offered to take on the maintenance of town centre toilets if they reopened.

Jane Horton and Anneka Parker want to see the public conveniences off Brownlow Street Car Park reopened after they were closed more than a decade ago.

They have even offered to take on the cleaning of the toilets.

But so far they have been met with confusion over who owns the toilets, which won the Best Loo Award in 1993, according to a plaque above the door.

Anneka explained: "Jane has been fighting for these toilets to be reopened for 15 years. She is a professional cleaner and we would be happy to keep them clean.

"She has tried to contact Whitchurch Town Council who say Shropshire Council own them, but then Shropshire Council say the town council own them.

"There are people out there who want to use these toilets and they could be reopened, but instead they are just sitting there empty."

Anneka added: "It's not fair. We are offering help; we live in Whitchurch.

"We keep getting thrown back from one place to another."

Mike McDonald, clerk of Whitchurch Town Council, confirmed that the authority has been keen to reopen the toilet block but negotiations have not progressed in allowing them to take over the lease.

Shropshire Council were contacted for a comment.
