They added that “police were informed, as this is believed to have been lit deliberately.”
Councillor for the ward, Rachel Williams, confirmed that “a resident reported seeing smoke followed by a loud bang at Malpas Recreation Ground.
“It quickly became apparent that the tunnel in the children’s play area had been deliberately set on fire – what possesses anyone to carry out such a mindless and dangerous act is beyond belief”.
Cllr Williams confirmed that this was not the first incident in the last few weeks.
There have also been repeated acts of vandalism, including damage to the new fencing, which had previously also been set alight, she added. “This is now the fourth reported incident on the site.
“Whilst we do not wish to alarm residents, it is clear that this behaviour has crossed the line from mindless vandalism into serious criminal activity.

“Fortunately, no one was harmed on this occasion, but if these acts of arson continue it may only be a matter of time before somebody is seriously injured.

“The fire spread rapidly and Cheshire Fire & Rescue Service attended the scene. Significant damage has been caused to the play area and, as a result, the trustees of the Malpas Recreation Ground Trust have been left with no option but to close the playground until further notice while safety assessments are carried out.”
