Drivers in Ellesmere have been caught speeding during targeted police checks.

Officers from the Oswestry Response Team and the Safer Neighbourhood Team carried out enforcement on the A495 Oswestry Road and Grange Road on Thursday (March 14), both of which are 30mph zones.

The activity followed concerns raised by members of Ellesmere Town Council and the community about speeding on these roads.

PC Perring of the Oswestry Response Team attended both locations and recorded 62 vehicles on Oswestry Road during a 40-minute period, with one driver clocked at 45mph.

A traffic offence report was issued to the driver for exceeding the speed limit after he was stopped by police.

On Grange Road, 42 vehicles were monitored in 30 minutes, with one driver recorded at 42mph.

Another traffic offence report was issued to that motorist.

The average speeds recorded were 28mph on Oswestry Road and 26mph on Grange Road.

A spokesperson for the Oswestry and Ellesmere Safer Neighbourhood Policing Teams said: "Oswestry and Ellesmere Safer Neighbourhood Policing Teams are committed to addressing concerns raised by their local communities and Town and Parish Councils with activities like the above a small part in what they do to keep our communities and roads safe."

Officers say that speed checks and similar enforcement activities are a small part of their wider efforts to keep roads and communities safe.
