Aldi has revived plans to open a new store in Ellesmere

Proposals are for a site in Ellesmere, Shropshire, on land off Scotland Street (A495) opposite Ellesmere Business Park.

The plans follow an initial public consultation held in February 2023. Out of 900 respondents, 89 per cent supported the development.

Stephen Jones, real estate manager for Aldi, said: "We're delighted to announce our plans for a new food store at this site in Ellesmere.

"Having previously had such a positive response to our proposals for Ellesmere, we’re excited to be presenting them once again, following productive discussions with planning officers.

"We’d like to encourage everyone in the local area to let us know what they think about our plans and look forward to working with residents and stakeholders to deliver a new Aldi food store for the area."

The nearest Aldi stores are currently in Oswestry and Whitchurch, both described as busy and serving separate catchment areas.

Ellesmere has limited discount retail options.

If approved, the new store is expected to create 40 new, full-time jobs.

The jobs would be paid at an industry-leading rate of £13.50 per hour, with hiring targeted at the local community.

Access to the store would be via a new link road branching off the A495, which already has planning permission.

The site would include 128 parking spaces, with pedestrians and cyclists accommodated through dedicated walkways and crossings.

Aldi is holding a virtual public consultation to gather community feedback on the updated proposals.

The consultation runs from Monday, April 27 to Monday, May 11.

Residents can view the plans at www.aldiconsultation.co.uk/ellesmere and provide feedback through an online form.

Additional information is available by calling the freephone information number on 0800 066 8941 or by emailing north@consultationonline.co.uk.

Aldi aims to submit a formal planning application to Shropshire Council in the coming months, following the completion of the consultation process.
