Armed police have been engaged in a three-hour stand-off in Malpas.

Eyewitnesses have reported a large police presence in the village this afternoon with unconfirmed reports that man was armed.

There has been concerns in the village on social media with the large police presence in the area.

Resident and Parish Councillor Charles Higgie has said he cannot remember anything like this happening in the 60 years he has been living there.

“I was in the centre of Malpas before 12pm I noticed a police car had blocked of the top of Wells Street,” said Mr Higgie.

“I took a photograph to warn people. I was told that there were police with guns. I had to take my car home by an alternative route.

"I then walked over to have a look and the police officer shouted at me to ‘get indoors’.”

Images shared by Mr Higgie show a large number of armed police at a property near Springfield Avenue. He reported that the post man was not able to deliver on the area and was also ordered to stay away.

“I went to approach the incident from other angles,” said Mr Higgie.

“In the last few minutes it appears to have resolved itself , so it was about a three-hour standoff.

“Normally this is quite a trouble-free community. I was just saying this to my other half the other day. I cannot remember anything like this happening before"

Cheshire Police have since confirmed that officers were called to the scene, just before 11pm, due to concerns about an individual's welfare.

A spokesperson for Cheshire Police said: "At 10.45am today, Monday 30 March, police were called to concerns for the welfare of a man on Springfield Avenue, Malpas.

"Officers attended and spoke with the man. He was then taken to Leighton Hospital for treatment."
