New jobs could be coming to the area as a large-scale egg farm looks set to re-open next month after being hit by bird flu last year.

Oaklands Farm Eggs has said it has taken “a significant step forward in its road to recovery” following a devastating avian flu outbreak at its farm in Wem in January 2025, which led to thousands of birds being culled.

The company, run by the Griffiths family, has confirmed that it is now expecting to re-open the farm in the coming weeks and will be looking to hire new employees.

Oaklands Farm Eggs said over the last year it has “worked diligently with government officials” to oversee a range of redevelopments on the affected site, which will “modernise and enhance facilities”.

While redevelopment was underway, the business was able to re-deploy many of its staff into other roles at its recently built processing site in Shawbury, other farms in Devon, and its other packing operation in Wrexham.

Now that the site is set to reopen, the firm is now looking to add new members to the workforce.

"The avian flu outbreak in 2025 was an incredibly challenging time for our business and our people,” said owner Elwyn Griffiths.

“However, it also gave us the opportunity to rebuild stronger, invest in the future, and reinforce our commitment to excellence, animal welfare, and local food production.

“We are proud to be bringing the Wem production site online over the next few months and will look to welcome new poultry-focused employees to join the team.

“We are starting our recruitment for farms now, so get in touch if you want to explore this great opportunity.”

The new improvements will not only “focus on increasing operational efficiency and strengthening disease prevention measures”, but “go further in supporting the future expansion of the business in cage -free egg production”.

Oaklands Farm Eggs thanked its staff, partners, customers, and the wider community for their “continued support during what has been a challenging period for the business” adding  that “their loyalty and encouragement have played a vital role in enabling the company to move forward with confidence”.
