A world record attempt to create the largest ever snowflake right here in Shropshire has helped to raise more than £1,800 for charity.

Phil Tranter is currently waiting to hear back from Guinness World Records about his hopes of breaking the record for the largest decorative snowflake after he created a five-metre wide giant structure.

It featured 600 lights that appeared as part of his annual festive display at his Higher Heath home.

He told the Whitchurch Herald: "The application has now been submitted and I await a response from Guinness World Records now - I'm feeling nervous and excited."

Last Christmas was the 25th year that Phil has hosted the extravaganza, which began on November 23, with a switch-on event.

His lights display is also a fundraiser for the Midlands Air Ambulance and this year was the most successful yet, raising more than £1,800 for the charity.

Phil said the amount was "fabulous".

Phil is hoping that his record attempt will beat the current one - which is 3.2 metres at Universal Studios in Japan - by a long way.

Work on the record attempt - and this year's display - began in the spring and since then, Phil has been giving as much time as he can to creating it piece by piece.

The 50-year-old added that he likes to grow the display every year to encourage people to keep visiting and this year he has added 15,000 additional lights.
