Schoolchildren near Whitchurch had their eyes to the skies as Santa was given a lift by RAF Shawbury.

The RAF gave Santa a lift on his trip to visit children at the Princess Royal Hospital and was greeted by children at Prees C of E Primary School.

This saw him say hello to schools all over county with children in Prees coming out to wish him Merry Christmas on Wednesday (December 17).

In a post online the school said: “We had the most amazing surprise today! After our delicious lunch, we caught sight of Father Christmas flying right over the school field in a helicopter!

“Our sincere thanks to RAF Shawbury for making this amazing experience happen! The children, and staff, were so excited.”

Prees was one of over a dozen schools where Santa passed by with the RAF going past St Mary’s School, Clive C of E school, St Peters Primary School, Hodnet Primary School,  Stoke on Tern, Buntingsdale, Market Drayton Juniors, Market Drayton Infants, Longlands Primary School, Hazels Farm, Crudgington Primary School, High Ercall Primary, Coleham Primary School and Woodfield Infants.

All this was before he arrived at the Princess Royal Hospital where he greeted patients on the neonatal unit and children’s ward to bring some Christmas cheer for those who may be spending the day in hospital.

A spokesperson for RAF Shawbury said: “Yesterday No. 1 Flying Training School at RAF Shawbury gave Santa a lift in one of their Juno helicopters so that he could flypast local schools and visit children at the Princess Royal Hospital's Shropshire Women and Children’s Centre before he gets too busy on the big day.

“Santa flew over 15 schools on his journey waving to the children as he passed by. The Headteacher at Prees CE Primary School said, “So many excited children and staff. It really was the most magical experience.”

“After the flypasts the Juno delivered Santa safely to the Princess Royal Hospital where thrilled children, parents and staff gathered to welcome him.

“In the hospital Santa and his Elves visited the Neonatal Unit and the Children’s Wards giving out gifts from RAF Shawbury. One of the Mums said, ‘we have been told we will be in hospital over Christmas, so this visit is so special.’”
