A Whitchurch man has received a suspended prison sentence after he admitted wounding a man.

Christopher Newey pleaded guilty to inflicting grievous bodily harm without intent on Richard Harvey Sarginson in Newport, Shropshire, on May 17.

The 48-year-old, of Bridgewater Street, appeared before magistrates sitting in Telford last Monday (July 28).

Magistrates told Newey that he would receive a 12-month prison sentence, but they would suspend it for 12 months as they felt due to the serious injuries inflicted, only a custodial sentence could be justified.

Newey must complete 250 hours unpaid work and pay Mr Sarginson £419.99.

No orders for costs, or a victim surcharge, were made.
