North Shropshire MP Helen Morgan is asking for residents to help hold the Government to account over the 'poor' mobile signal across large parts of the region.
She is calling on people to use Ofcom’s newly launched ‘Map Your Mobile’ coverage checker and report their findings to help challenge official mobile coverage data.
Ms Morgan said: "Reliable mobile signal is a necessity in the modern world – not a luxury – but in too many parts of Shropshire it is still impossible to get a reliable connection.
"This is just one of many examples where rural areas have to put up with second-class services.
"The recent report from the River Severn Partnership shows what rural communities have been saying for years – that the official figures don’t reflect the reality on the ground.
"That’s why I’m asking constituents to check Ofcom’s new service and help me hold them to account to achieve better mobile signal for everyone."
Ofcom’s new tool provides a performance score by postcode to indicate coverage.
However, a recent report from the River Severn Partnership Advanced Wireless Innovation Region (RSPAWIR) challenges Ofcom’s data.
Ofcom claims every area in North Shropshire is covered by at least one mobile network operator, but the RSPAWIR report found that two per cent of postcodes in the constituency have no coverage at all.
Ms Morgan has long argued that official figures misrepresent the true situation.
Since her election, she has campaigned for improved rural mobile connectivity and launched the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Digital Communities, which is currently investigating rural mobile services.
She is now urging residents to use Ofcom’s checker and share their experiences to help drive improvements in mobile connectivity across North Shropshire.
