WELCOME to another edition of bygones as we invite readers to join us in the 1970s.
Today we offer a sprinkling of the entire decade with a few pictures from the archive for all to enjoy. We also have a lovely diverse selection of topics to illustrate life in Powys.
As ever we encourage all our readers to share their pictures from the past with us so as many people as possible can enjoy and encourage all club secretaries and organisation heads to promote their group by sharing precious pictures from yesteryear.
We begin today’s stroll down memory lane with a wonderful picture of Thanksgiving at Newtown’s Penygloddfa Primary School in 1974. What an amazing haul. Certainly these pupils and indeed the entire district surely had a reason to be thankful that year.
OTHER NEWS:
- Young woman sentenced for chasing man in street holding knife above her head
- Four Powys farmers chosen for prestigious leadership programme
- Powys pub up for sale after having the same owners for quarter of a century
Next we share a lovely set of pictures of members of Llansantffraid YFC who took part in a nationwide entertainment show in 1971. Recognise any familiar faces? How did the team get on? Get in touch and let us know.
The Machynlleth Rose Queen of 1977 and her attendants.
Welshpool Town manager Len Kilby with Welsh Amateur Cup winning stars Mike Pragg and Derek Lockier in 1977.
We share a picture of Llanfair Caereinion High School hockey team from 1977 in our next picture from the decade.
Our final picture on this page shows friends at Newtown College in 1976 enjoying the annual Rag Ball with each obviously a fan of a popular tea advert from the time.
On the facing page we begin with one of our favourite pictures from the archive as Newtown youngsters are pictured enjoying a disco at the town’s Elephant and Castle in 1976. Were these a precursor to the popular ‘Ellie Dances?’ which entertained generations of youths?
Next we venture to Llanymynech in 1975 when villagers took part in a walk around the parish boundaries.
This sounds like a wonderful event and a fantastic idea to bring people from towns and villages together.
We are also a big fan of the next picture which shows a beaming Susan Bowen after winning several arts and crafts events at Sarn Show in 1979. What a fantastic collage as well, we can certainly see why this young artist swept the board that summer.
Our next picture shows the Caersws Football Club team which lost 3-0 to Wrexham in a friendly in 1979. Recognise any familiar faces among this crop of Bluebirds?
Our final picture from the 1970s shows finalists of Miss Newtown Royal British Legion in 1974.
We have no information which of these ladies took the crown or whether this event is still held but what a wonderful picture from a 1974.
