A WHITCHURCH bowls club has raised thousands of pounds for a Shropshire cancer charity thanks to the generosity of members.

Whitchurch & District Club, based in St John’s Street, raised £2,015 for Lingen Davies during their president’s day, which included a silent auction as well as an evening disco, which was put on for free by Whitchurch mayor Councillor Andy Hall.

It is the second year the club has raised money for the vital charity and president Pat Paddington said it was thanks to wonderful donations by members and their friends.

She said: “To raise that amount of money in just two short days is great.

“I didn’t expect it to be this much, last year it was around £1,500 and we surpassed that.

“I am so pleased though, the charity is close to my heart as they helped out a family member who was treated for – and thankfully beat – Hodgkin’s Lymphoma around eight years ago.

“I helped out with running the event for a friend who was president of the club last year and was excited to be able to do it again this year.

“It is amazing what people will donate and how generous they are.”

The president’s day happened in September, with the silent auction of items donated by club members run by retired auctioneer Dave Fisher. It featured a variety of bowls, binoculars, bottles and much more.

Having collected all the money raised, the club has now presented a cheque to the charity.

Emma Backhouse, acting chief executive officer for Lingen Davies, said: “We are so thankful to Whitchurch & District Club for their generous donation.

“This money will go a long way to helping enhance and improve the lives of cancer patients across Shropshire and Powys.

“We aim to simply make lives easier for those going through cancer or those watching loved ones go through it, and this money will help us do just that.

“I would like to thank the club for choosing our charity as their nominated charity to raise money for on their President’s day and also to every member and friend who attended for pledging so much at auction, it is an incredible amount raised.”
