A SERVICE of thanks for the much-loved Whitchurch businessman Ray Grocott will now take place at a larger venue.

Originally planned for St Chad’s Church in Prees, a spokesman for the Grocott family confirmed that the number of people indicating their attendance has led to a decision to change the venue.

The tribute to Ray will now take place at the recently-opened Grocott Heritage Centre, in Station Road, Prees, which recently held an exhibition showing the many years of Ray’s career.

The spokesman said: “Due to anticipated large numbers for Ray’s Service of Thanksgiving next Saturday, October 14, the Grocott family has taken the decision to move the service from St Chad’s Church to the Grocott Heritage Centre.

They added: “A celebratory service of thanksgiving for Ray’s life will be held at the Grocott Heritage Centre, Brookdale, Station Road, Prees SY13 2DW on Saturday, October 14 at 1.30pm.”

Meanwhile, people in Whitchurch have been paying their own tributes to Ray, who founded Grocontinental which is one of the town’s biggest employers.

Su Broster said: “Such a nice man, loved seeing him when I worked there.”

Anna Sanderson said: “What an amazing gentleman and philanthropist.

“I'm so glad I had the pleasure of a couple of chats with him.

“An example of a true legend.”
