ELLESMERE Rangers Football Club have dropped a bombshell by resigning from the North West Counties League South.

The Beech Grove club confirmed it had taken the decision to resign and enter the Salop Leisure Premier League next season.

A club statement read: "Ellesmere Rangers have had to make the difficult decision to drop out of the North West Counties Football League and play in the Salop Leisure Premier League.

"The decision was made by the committee to safeguard the future of the club and to engage with the local community and play against Shropshire teams.

"Taking a step backwards will hopefully help us move forward in the future. Thanks to everyone that has and continues to support the club."

Rangers narrowly missed out on a promotion play-off place last season.

However the club has appealed for new committee members and volunteers while manager Matt Burton stepped down at the end of the season with the Swans also on the look out for a new management team.
