Birthday celebrations are being prepared to honour a wartime evacuee who came to Whitchurch.

Eileen Grace is a resident in Greenfields Care Home in Liverpool Road and will be celebrating her 100th birthday on Thursday, September 15.

She came to Whitchurch after being evacuated from Liverpool in the Second World War.

Her granddaughter, Clare Williams, said Eileen went on to enlist in the Women's Auxiliary Air Force n(WAAF) and married local businessman Frank Grace, who himself served in the RAF during the war.

Whitchurch Herald: Eileen, who went on to serve in the Women's Auxiliary Air Force during the Second World War with her husband Frank.

She added: "Born Eileen O'Gara, she was evacuated to Whitchurch from Liverpool during WWII, later enlisting in the WAAF.

"She married local businessman Frank Grace, master baker at Grace's, 42 Watergate Street.

"Eileen often worked behind the counter.

"She was active in the Catholic church and also regularly played golf at Hawkstone, where she was Lady Captain.

"She now lives at Greenfields care home."
