The claim that Bradford is Europe’s most dangerous city has been branded “nonsense” by a leading community figure.

Serbia-based Numbeo, a controversial crowd-sourced database, claimed Bradford had the highest crime rate in the continent, followed by Coventry and Nantes, France.

Dr Javed Bashir, who was awarded a doctorate for his community cohesion work, said the former home of textiles was “no different” from any other major city.

The Keighley-based stalwart said: “In terms of crime, Bradford is no different from any major cities but overall, Bradford is quite a safe and friendly place to live. There are unsociable behaviours in some parts but sex crimes, violent knife crimes and rival gangs in areas like London have been ignored.

“People are very friendly and always help one another particularly in times of crises. Bradford’s faith communities have gone out of their way to help those in need and isolation particularly during the Covid-19 lockdown.

“Studies like these will do no favour to Bradford which is already suffering from social and economical deprivation.

“This negative study and negative reporting can have a knock-on effect and can discourage potential investors, tourists and students.

“I hope people don't take this study too seriously and don’t judge the city by this nonsense study.”
