A COMBINE harvester was destroyed when a fire broke out in Wem on Thursday (August 11) evening.

The incident is the latest in a series of similar fires which have happened across north Shropshire as the summer heatwave continues.

Thursday's blaze happened in a field off Shawbury Road just after 6pm.

Firefighters from Wem, Prees and Shrewsbury were in attendance, including the incident support unit, plus an operations officer.

They used breathing apparatus, the hosereel jet and small gear to put out the fire.

A spokesperson for Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "Combine Harvester fully involved in fire as well as stubble in field."

The stop call came in just before 7.15pm.

It comes just over a day since a combine harvester caught fire in fields at nearby Soulton Hall.

Tim Ashton, owner of the 16th century manor, praised firefighters for their quick actions and confirmed it was business as usual the following day.
