THE Whitchurch Rotary Club has been presented with a £2,000 donation from the town council towards the cost of this year's prostate cancer screening.

The mayor of Whitchurch, Councillor Andy Hall presented the cheque to the president of Whitchurch Rotary Club, Steve Chisholm ahead of the event which will be held in September.

It will see men over 45 be invited to take a free blood test to detect the presence of prostate cancer.

More than 1,500 men have taken the tests to detect early signs of prostate cancer and the costs will be covered by public donations and Rotary fundraising.

The results will be strictly confidential and go to the individual.

Steve said taking the test is the best decision men could make.

He added: "We are so grateful for the donation because this is a life-saving project that’s become one of the most important things we do in the town.

"We don’t know of any other Rotary Club in the district that arranges this type of screening.

"It’s a fact that one in three men over 45 are affected by the UK’s biggest killer of men in this age group and yet diagnosing the early stages can still lead to a cure.

"So, taking the test could be the most important decision a man ever makes."
