SWIMMERS at a popular open water venue outside Whitchurch are being urged to remain patient while further testing is carried out after an algae bloom was found.

The water at Alderford Lake has been closed to the public following the discovery of the algae bloom through the business's regular testing.

A spokesman for the business, which welcomes walkers and open water swimmers, said much of the business will remain open but the water is closed for at least week ahead of further testing.

"At Alderford we test our water regularly for bacteria’s and algaes," they said.

"On Friday, we received the results of this week's routine test.

"The results report the prevalence of an algae bloom, which consequently means that the water quality falls below the safe standards for open water swimming.

"As a natural lake, it is not uncommon for the lake to develop algae blooms, most of which are completely unharmful.

"Luckily, we have never had a blue green algae bloom before but of course we are vigilant with our routine testing to ensure that these blooms are caught as early as possible.

"Therefore, we have taken the decision to close the lake until we retest next week.

"The Lakeside Kitchen, walk, escape islands and play area remain open.

"We ask dogs are kept on leads and away from the water.

"If you have swam/used the lake over the last few days and you begin to feel unwell, please seek medical advice.

"The team are busy contacting all bookings for this weekend and please be patient we will get to you as soon as possible.

"Please wait to be contacted rather than calling/emailing us."
