TWO new members of Whitchurch Town Council say they are looking forward to playing their part in working for the community.

Cathy Purt and Peter Tew were welcomed to the town council at its latest full meeting, held at the Civic Centre on Thursday, June 16 at 7.15pm.

Councillor Purt said she wanted to do more for the community after moving to the town.

She said: "I came from Hertfordshire originally.

"My daughter went to Sir John Talbot's School.

"I am a non-executive director on Shropshire Community Health NHS Trust.

"My interests are in health and fitness, I also like to look at how food impacts on us.

"I would like to do more for the community."

Cllr Tew said he wanted to help having previously been disillusioned by previous years of the council.

He said: "I have lived in Whitchurch all my life.

"I have been involved in local football clubs, societies and fundraising events.

"Over the years it has been disillusionment.

"The council has got everything going forward.

"I would like to be part of it.

"Anything I can do to help the town and the community I would like to be part of."

Former councillor and mayor Alan Chesters had been intending to attend to receive the award of 'Honorary Townsman' but was unable to attend due to illness.

Cllr Andy Hall thanked Mr Chesters for his service to Whitchurch.

He said: "It is recognition of Alan's work for over 14 years.

"I would like to thank Alan and the family for services to the town council."

The funeral of former councillor and mayor Johnnie Bates was held in St Alkmund's on Wednesday, June 15 and Cllr Hall said it was an honour to attend.

He added: "We attended the funeral in St Alkmund's.

"It was an honour to attend.

"They gave him a good send-off.

"Johnnie would have been pleased, it was right up his street."

Other issues discussed included the recent withdrew by the developer Gleeson Homes to build 73 houses in Prince William Close.

Cllr Peggy Mullock, from Shropshire Council, was at the meeting and warned the town council about Gleeson potentially coming again.

She said: "They are looking again at the plot.

"Be ready for them to come back, they might come again."
