A CRUFTS dog show commentator has been lending his expertise to a community competition in a village outside Whitchurch.

Frank Kane, who is renowned for his experience with the world-famous event, presided over the Whixall Dog Show, at the Whixall Social Centre on Sunday, June 12 to judge the competitions.

Elaine Turnbull is the show manager and said she has known Frank for a long time, and said he was more than happy to lend a favour to give the show an official feel.

She added: "We are trying to make this the most supreme dog show in Shropshire.

"Frank is a dear friend and doing me the biggest favour ever.

"Tomorrow morning, he is flying to America.

"Frank has not done companion dog shows for years but it was a nice favour to us.

"Everybody could not believe I have got Frank Kane here."

Elaine said she hopes to use the event to raise money for the village hall.

She added: "We are sponsored by local companies in the area, which we are really grateful for.

"It is really to keep the village hall going, this is what we are raising for."

Frank was full of praise for the organisers.

He said: "I am glad to be here, shows are always a great enjoyment.

"The quality of the dogs today, there have been some very nice ones and always good to see.

"We see here people enjoying the dogs and what enjoyment dogs bring to people's lives.

"It is good for socialising the dogs and the owners and above all it is for a good cause.

"Great organiser, a huge amount of work goes into this and we have to give credit for that.

"I hope it raises lots of money."

Helen Connolly was at the show with her dog, Katya, a Borzoi and said events like the Whixall Dog Show were beneficial for Katya.

She explained: "She has been difficult with people, they have touched her head she has snapped.

"She hasn't done that today, but I couldn't guarantee she wouldn't and that is what I want to get her out of.

"In a strange environment she does get edgy and then a human can be a threat to her, it is very sensitive breed really.

"Highly tuned, prey instinct is pretty high so they are always on the alert."

Andrew Heath is the owner of a Bugsy, a Skye Terrier and they won Best Pedigree.

He said: "It is good, especially being local as well.

"Skye Terriers are a vulnerable breed.

"It is nice to get them out and about so the public can see them."
