TRIBUTES have been paid to a former councillor and mayor of Whitchurch who passed away at the beginning of this month.

John Bates, known locally as Johnnie, died peacefully on June 2 in the Greenfields Care Home in Whitchurch. He was 95 years old.

The town clerk of Whitchurch Town Council, Mike McDonald, said Johnnie would be missed and flags would be flown at half mast.

He added: "We were very saddened to hear of the recent passing of former town councillor and mayor of Whitchurch, John (Johnnie) Bates.

"A very much loved and respected figure throughout the town, he will be remembered for many achievements, not least his involvement with the Whitchurch Carnival.

"His legacy will live on.

"Johnnie's funeral takes place next Wednesday, June 15 and as a mark of respect the Civic Centre flags will be flown at half mast.

"Rest in Peace, Johnnie."

Current mayor, Councillor Andy Hall, praised Johnnie for his services to the town.

He added: "Johnnie was an amazing councillor and mayor for our town and genuinely cared about its people and put everyone else first.

"His love of animals shone through and will be much missed by many who remember his enormous contribution to both the town and county.

"RIP Johnnie and thank you."

His funeral will take place in St Alkmund's Church at 11am.
