WEM Carnival will be going ahead for the first time since 2019 but there are fears 2022 could be the last one.

The carnival will take place on Saturday, September 3 and organisers have appealed for volunteers to help with the running of the event.

A spokesman for Wem Carnival said volunteers will be needed to ensure the event runs annually and fears the town will not be able to hold any more carnivals without adequate numbers.

He added: "We can officially announce that carnival will be going ahead this year.

"However, for this year to succeed and for it to carry on yearly we need more committed committee members to help coordinate the planning and or volunteers on the day.

"The core of the current committee all work full time and many away from Wem itself.

"We are appealing for people who are willing to give up some of their time.

"It may only be a couple of hours here and there but whatever you can offer we need you.

"It has got to the stage where if we don’t get more people on board this will be the last year that Wem holds its carnival."

There are many roles including for secretary, events assistants, general assistants, and parade marshals.

The spokesman made an appeal to local businesses for support.

He added: "Wem Carnival brings in a lot of trade to our little town and we all need to come together to help keep this going.

"We need your help and support too.

"If you can do anything to help, please get in touch."
