ELLESMERE Town Council has joined forces with one of the town's most iconic settings for a special event for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

On Thursday (tomorrow), there will a special lighting of a Beacon at St Mary's Church grounds, overlooking Church Street, from 6pm.

A town council spokesman said they were delighted to be working with the church for such a significant event.

They said: "We are extremely excited to have been working with Reverend Pat Hawkins of St Mary's Church to arrange for an Official Jubilee Beacon to be placed in the grounds of the church ahead of the Jubilee weekend.

"We are very lucky to have commissioned Local artist Gavin Lewery to create the beacon for us, it will be lit along with thousands of others throughout the country at 9.15pm on Thursday, June 2.

"Ahead of the Beacon lighting, the church will be open for people to visit, and there be a short service followed by refreshments.

"It would be lovely to see as many people at the church as possible to mark this momentous occasion, please feel free to come along and celebrate the official start to the Jubilee weekend."

The church opens at 6pm with a Jubilee service from 7.45 until 8pm, refreshments at 8.30pm and the lighting of the beacon at 9.15pm.
