A SHROPSHIRE charity is encouraging older people to come along to a free programme in Whitchurch which aims to reduce the risk of falling.

Community Resource (formerly Shropshire Rural Communities Charity) is hosting 'Functional Fitness' MOTs on Wednesday, June 8 between 10.30am and 2pm in the Beechtree Centre, in Claypit Street, for people between the ages of 60 and 95.

Activities include one-to-one fitness tests measuring strength, balance, flexibility and stamina and there will be information on how to reduce the risk of falling, with a demonstration on how to get up from the floor after falling.

Community Resource development officer Susie Hancock urged people to get in touch if they knew others who were feeling less steady on their feet.

She said: "We are travelling around the county to offer advice to people who are keen to test their fitness levels, something that is especially important given the impact the pandemic had on our options for keeping active.

"If you or someone you know is feeling less steady on their feet then please get in touch.

"We provide a friendly, relaxed atmosphere for people to take their time, ask questions and get the support they need to help reduce their risk of falling."

The Functional Fitness MOTs are supported by the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust Charity and NHS Charities Together.

A further Functional Fitness MOT event will be held in Donnington Community Hub on Thursday, June 16.
