The mayor of Whitchurch turned DJ for the night as a celebration disco ball was held "to bring the town together".

The disco took place in the Civic Centre, High Street on Saturday, May 21 to mark Councillor Andy Hall becoming mayor and the town having a new council.

The event was free and attendees were able to enjoy music from the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, and the hits of soul and Motown.

Town clerk Mike McDonald from Whitchurch Town Council thanked the people of the town for attending the event.

He added: "What an amazing time we had at The Civic last night, thank you Whitchurch.

"Thanks to everyone who made this free event possible including the incredible staff team at the Civic, our new town council and mayor Andy Hall and of course you for supporting it."

The spokesman said the night enabled people to meet with Cllr Hall and other councillors.

He explained: "It was important for the council to open the doors and show what we are like going forward.

"To engage more with the town and it was a chance for people to meet Andy, the councillors and everyone here.

"It was very much in the spirit of being open, open and transparent going forward for people to meet us and talk to us.

"It was an opportunity to throw the doors open, we recognise that we are in a period of austerity.

"All our people are feeling the pinch which is why we did it as a free event."

The mayor, who was a DJ on the night, thanked people for turning up to the event.

Cllr Hall said: "It was a brilliant event, it was just nice to have an event the people of Whitchurch could come to for free.

"After being locked up for so long with Covid-19 it was nice to get out and see Whitchurch busy again.

"Importantly, the night time economy was really busy because all the pubs were packed which was great to see.

"It is about lifting the town, moving forward and turning a corner.

"It was a great night for everybody and hopefully we are going to have many more.

"A special thanks to Cllr Jack Thornton and Cllr Pete Lea who certainly helped me out in organising the night.

"In addition to that my fellow councillors who stepped up and came along and really enjoyed the night and a thanks for the support from the people who turned out."
