WEAPONS have been seized in Ellesmere as part of a nationwide operations.

Members of the Oswestry Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) took part in a weapon sweep in Ellesmere on Monday (May 16) evening and found a hachet blade and a pad saw in one location.

They shared the finds on social media.

The sweep forms part of West Mercia Police's efforts as part of Operation Sceptre which aims to tackle knife crime across the country.

Various engagement work will be taking place across the area over the coming week, including an amnesty bin which will be in place at the front desk of Oswestry Police Station on Wednesday (May 18) for people to dispose of blade anonymously.

A spokesperson for West Mercia Police said: "This week sees the launch of the national knife surrender campaign #OpSceptre. Throughout the week, as they do all year round, our officers will be raising awareness of the dangers of carrying a knife. "To help prevent your unwanted knives from getting into the wrong hands and potentially being used in crime, you can help by disposing of them at one of our knife surrender bins."

During front office opening hours, unwanted knives can be disposed of at the following police stations:

  • Hereford
  • Worcester
  • Kidderminster
  • Telford (Malinsgate)
  • Shrewsbury (Monkmoor)
