A COLOURFUL array of patchwork filled Whitchurch Civic Centre last week.

The Malpas Fabric Arts Group put on its Patchwork and Quilting Exhibition and welcomed visitors from across the Midlands, the North West and North Wales to see the stitched quilts and fabric items.

More than 100 quits were on display as well as other hand-crafted items including cushions, wall hangings, bags and pictures.

Spokeswoman for the group, Fiona Roberts said visitors got to vote for their favourite quilt and there were raffle prizes.

She added: "Visitors were invited to vote for their favourite quilt and this was won by treasurer, Sally Greenwood, who had made a stunning bed quilt. Kate Westgate came second.

"The raffle prizes were announced as the event closed, and the winners of the two hand-stitched quilts were Hilary Evans and Val Webb.

"Local businesses Moo and Boom, Tree House, Home Folk and Make Your House a Home contributed, and winners were delighted with these special prizes from the local business community.

"The group chose two charities, Hearing Dogs for the Deaf and Cancer Research who will each receive donations from the proceeds of the event."

The chairman of the group, Gill Rich said three people were inspired to join the group following the event.

She explained: "We are thrilled to have been able to exhibit members’ achievements from the last few years and enjoyed seeing finished quilts displayed for everyone to admire.

"It was special to invite visitors and we have already inspired three ladies to join our group.

"We hope that the people who came along also took the opportunity to see what Whitchurch has to offer and supported the amazing variety of shops that we have in the town."
