WORK has started on the building of a new park, Whitchurch Town Council has confirmed.

Work started on the Deermoss Play Area, Brownlow Street, on Monday, April 25 and the park will be officially opened by the mayor of Whitchurch on Sunday, June 5.

The deputy mayor of Whitchurch, Councillor Andy Hall, said the investment in the play area was going to be beneficial for both children and parents in the town.

Cllr Hall said: "I am delighted to say this investment in this play is going to be amazing for the young people who live in the town, for the mums, dads and families.

"It has been a long time coming and we are going to put the money towards it.

"We are sitting on quite a lot of money. What we are looking at as a new council is investing in our town centre, investing money into our play area."

The play area will be officially opened on June 5 to coincide with the Jubilee weekend, and some celebrations will be held.

The deputy mayor said Whitchurch is expanding and there are young families moving into the area.

Cllr Hall said: "We are a growing town, we have got a lot of young families.

"The whole idea of the money is to invest in the town.

"While we have the new estates and new houses being built, some of the money goes into the infrastructure of the town.

"A perfect example of that is redoing old antiquated play areas that have been in need of repair for years and updated.

"This is just part of that programme."

Cllr Hall, commended the parks and public realms committee of Whitchurch Town Council for pushing with the project.

Cllr Hall said: "This has mainly been spearheaded by Cllr Phipps and Cllr Jack Thornton and the wider parks committee.

"Cllr Matt Phipps lives in that area of town and he spearheaded us going forward together with Cllr Jack Thornton, as chair of parks and the parks committee.

"He takes a lot of credit because he has really pushed for it, he has done a good job.

"The whole council is in support of the revamp but I have got to say there are councillors who have taken a real keen interest with the design and content of it as well."
