WEM TOWN Football Club have announced is to launch an Easter egg collection in aid of local foodbanks.

This will be the second big charity event the club have undertaken after they donated presents to Hope House Children's Hospice, Oswestry shortly before Christmas.

Mark Jones, Wem Town Football Club junior secretary, said the club had been motivated by the success of the previous scheme.

"We thought it would be a idea for the community to get involved in it and everyone seemed to embrace it," he said.

"We had a really good donation off the Co-Op in Wem.

"That went so well, we thought we would have a go at something for Easter as well.

"We just put the adverts out and got a great response from it.

"We hope to get a similar thing with the Easter eggs, which again is carrying on from where we left off."

The football club hope to donate Easter eggs to a number of locations across north Shropshire and confirmed they would be dropping off to a number of locations, including Helping Hands in Whitchurch.

Mark said: "There is Helping Hands, in Whitchurch, which we have contacted.

"We are going to be dropping some off in Whitchurch.

"If we get loads and loads, we will go to more places.

"If we don't get so many we will split it in half and go to the two places."

Many people have been struggling financially with dramatic increases in the cost of living and this has impacted significantly on north Shropshire.

In addition, the Covid-19 pandemic and lockdowns have left an increasing number of people to rely on foodbanks.

Mark hopes Easter eggs will bring a smile to the faces of those who have been struggling.

He said: "I think it has got worse.

"You see on the news all the time, people are struggling with paying or buying food.

"I heard somebody say on the news the prices are going to hike up again.

"We just thought, I know Easter eggs aren't a necessity, but it puts a smile on somebody's face.

"I thought it's Easter, let's try to keep it as joyful as we can.

"The toy thing obviously went well, the Easter egg just follows on."
