NORTH Shropshire MP Helen Morgan has called on the Government to provide "urgent funding" to fix problems in the area.

Ms Morgan said her constituency needed funds in order to ensure "levelling-up" and accused the Government of caring more about "flying flags than fixing problems."

Her call came not long after the Department for Levelling Up, Communities and Local Government made the decision to fly Shropshire's flag above their headquarters on Shropshire Day.

Ms Morgan said: "The Conservatives are virtue signalling over their support for levelling up Shropshire.

"They care more about flying flags than fixing problems.

"If this Conservative Government really cared about Shropshire, they would provide the urgent funding Shropshire needs.

"Shropshire faces a crisis in funding for social care, a crisis in ambulance and A&E services, and local services such as driving test centres and swimming pools closing.

"We have seen a third year of Shropshire being impacted by catastrophic flooding.

"The Government should be addressing these problems with urgency.

"Flying a flag in Westminster is a cynical publicity stunt that benefits no-one."

The Department for Levelling Up, Communities and Local Government's decision comes after the Government turned down three separate bids from Shropshire Council for funding.

A spokesperson for the Department for Levelling Up, Communities and Local Government said: "We won’t apologise for celebrating the rich history of Shropshire by flying its flag on its County Day.

"We have boosted Shropshire Council through the local government finance settlement with up to £19.6 million in funding in 22/23, taking the council’s core spending power to up to £284.1 million.

"Previously we have awarded the council over £43 million to improve infrastructure across the region, including £9.3 million from the Housing Infrastructure Fund to boost the capacity of the road network near Oswestry and improve the planned housing developments."
