The police helicopter had been hovering above the area throughout the afternoon, and local residents said lifeboats had been seen being moved in to the area.

North Wales Police have released this update on the searches:

"Shortly after 1pm yesterday (14 February) we received a missing person report relating to a 72-year-old man from the Wrexham area.

The man's family expressed concerns for his welfare and a search of the local area was conducted by officers.

A confirmed sighting of the man's vehicle, a red Kia Stonic, was later reported close to the River Dee in Holt, Wrexham.

Officers attended the location and conducted a co-ordinated search involving a drone operative, with further support provided by NPAS (National Police Air Service) and a search and rescue team.

The coastguard and North Wales Fire and Rescue Service officers also attended to assist with a search of nearby river banks, but the man was not located.

Renewed searches of the area have commenced this morning and our enquiries remain ongoing."
