FEBRUARY promises so much but tantalisingly falls short every time.

From slightly warmer weather to longer days which allow us to spend more time outside.

However it is never enough.

The winds and rain will eventually return and seem all the colder and wetter while darkness descends all too quickly.

The merits of putting our clocks back and forward once a year have been the cause of debate for many decades now.

Certainly the world we are living in today is unrecognisable from the one which ushered in British Summer Time in 1916 with less people working in the industries which the clocks were changed to support.

Mining no longer exists as an industry in this country and whether the agriculture industry benefits from the clocks going forward and back once a year remains a debate.

Our European cousins scrapped the custom last year and it remains to be see whether the UK follows suit or continues its more recent determination to go its own way.

In the meantime life in our beautiful part of the world continues unabated.

Our hills, valleys, waterways and settlements would be just as wonderful regardless of the time of day and we must all do our part to ensure they remain that way for future generations.

Just as our ancestors did for us.
