A LIVERPOOL man is seeking help in Whitchurch to potentially identify whether a family picture is the town's football club from the 1940s.

The picture is of a team with the initials 'WA' stamped on it, and contains Leslie Sumner – father of Tony – with his teammates.

Tony believes that with his father's wartime stationing in Shropshire, the picture could be of a fledgling Whitchurch Alport, and after drawing a blank up to now, he is hoping for help from the town.

He said: "I am hoping you can help me identify the attached football team photo, the photo includes my late father Leslie Sumner pictured front left, the initials 'WA' Which possibly stand for Whitchurch Alport and the year 1946/7.

"During the Second World War, my father was stationed in the Shropshire area with the Royal Artillery which is when he met my mother who was from Bishops Castle – bearing this in mind he quite possibly played for Whitchurch,

"I understand from the research I have carried out Whitchurch became a team in 1946 and played in the Shrewsbury and District League.

Anyone who may be able to help Tony with his search, you can email him at gaytsey@hotmail.com or telephone 0151 427 6688.
